Ready to dive into a refreshing start to the year? Austinites certainly were, as they embraced a beloved tradition: the Polar Bear Splash at Barton Springs Pool, ushering in the year 2026 with a chilly plunge!
This annual event, held on Thursday, saw a massive turnout, with Save Our Springs Alliance Executive Director Bill Bunch estimating around 3,000 enthusiastic participants braving the cold waters. It's a fantastic way to welcome the new year and leave the old one behind.
"There’s no better way to start the new year, to embrace the year ahead, and to connect with the life source of our city," Bunch shared, capturing the spirit of the event. His organization is dedicated to safeguarding Barton Springs and the crucial Edwards Aquifer.
But here's where it gets interesting... Despite the memorable floods of July, the watersheds feeding Barton Springs were largely unaffected. This means the pool is experiencing record low flows, and excessive pumping poses a real threat.
For some, like the Peters family, the Polar Bear Splash is more than just a tradition—it's a cherished memory in the making. They've been taking the plunge for approximately 20 years!
"How many New Year’s days do you remember what you did? At least we remember where we were," Ed Peters noted, while Sheila Peters added, "If you’re from Austin, that’s what you do."
