Boost Your Mental Health in January: One Simple Action for a Better 2026 (2026)

January Blues Got You Down? One Simple Step Can Make a World of Difference

Let's face it, January can be tough. The holiday glow fades, the cold sets in, and the pressure to hit the ground running feels overwhelming. But here's the good news: you don't need a complete lifestyle overhaul to boost your mental health this month. Our Starting Well campaign is all about empowering you to take one intentional action for your well-being. Think of it as a ripple effect – small changes can lead to big improvements.

This year's theme, 'Do One Thing to Support Your Mental Health,' focuses on four key areas: movement, health, personal development, and mental health awareness. Ele Morrissey, Executive Director of People, emphasizes the power of simplicity: “By encouraging colleagues to focus on just one thing, we're creating space for meaningful actions that truly make a difference. My personal commitment this January is to structure my day for a daily walk – a simple act with profound benefits. I invite everyone to join me in this journey of self-care and mutual support.”

And this is the part most people miss: It's not about grand gestures, but about finding what works for you. Whether it's a daily walk, a mindfulness practice, or connecting with a colleague, the key is consistency and intention.

Our campaign culminates on Time to Talk Day (February 5th), a national initiative encouraging open conversations about mental health. We encourage teams across the university to come together during the week of February 2nd-6th to share their 'One Thing' experiences and support each other.

Controversial Question: Is 'One Thing' Enough?

While focusing on one actionable step is a powerful starting point, some argue that addressing mental health requires a more comprehensive approach. What do you think? Is 'One Thing' a realistic and effective strategy, or does it oversimplify a complex issue? Share your thoughts in the comments below – let's spark a conversation about what truly supports our well-being.
