The Hobby World is Shaking: Collectors Snags Beckett in a Move That’s Raising Eyebrows
In a move that’s sending ripples through the collectibles community, Collectors—the parent company of Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA)—has announced its acquisition of Beckett, another titan in the hobby space. This comes hot on the heels of Collectors’ February 2024 purchase of SGC, leaving many collectors wondering: What’s next for the industry?
According to a press release (https://www.collectors.com/company-announcement), the two companies have inked a 'definitive agreement' for the sale. Nat Turner, CEO of Collectors, shared his enthusiasm: 'I’m thrilled to welcome the iconic Beckett into the Collectors family. As someone who submitted my first card for grading to Beckett, I see Collectors as stewards of this beloved hobby icon. We believe strong, well-supported brands are key to making the hobby more accessible to everyone.'
But here’s where it gets controversial... While Turner assured that Beckett will remain an independent brand, handling its own grading, magazine, and marketplace services, the industry can’t help but recall the SGC acquisition. Initially, Collectors promised SGC’s independence, but a July 2025 announcement (https://www.si.com/collectibles/sgc-s-peter-steinberg-stepping-down-effective-immediately) revealed that former CEO Peter Steinberg was stepping down, and SGC was being repositioned as a 'boutique shop.' Submission numbers to SGC soon began to decline, according to Gem Rate (https://www.gemrate.com/). Will Beckett face a similar fate?
Founded in 1984 by Dr. James as Beckett Publications, the company—now known as Beckett Media—is a household name in the hobby. While its grading services are widely recognized, Beckett’s monthly sports card price guides were the cornerstone of its popularity. Collectors relied on these guides to track the value of their collections, month by month. It’s a legacy that has many fans hoping Collectors will preserve the brand’s essence.
Kevin Isaacson, CEO of Collēctīvus, Beckett’s previous parent company (announced in December 2024: https://www.si.com/collectibles/news/beckett-collectibles-has-a-new-parent-company), expressed confidence in the transition. 'Beckett is in good hands,' he said, praising Collectors’ respect for the brand’s heritage.
And this is the part most people miss... The sales agreement explicitly states that pricing will remain unchanged, and current orders with PSA or Beckett will not be affected. But as Collectors consolidates its grip on the hobby, questions linger. Is this a step toward greater accessibility, or a monopolistic move that could stifle competition?
For now, collectors are watching closely, eager to see how Beckett’s storied legacy evolves under its new ownership. One thing’s for sure: the hobby world will never be the same. What do you think? Is this a win for collectors, or a cause for concern? Let us know in the comments!
