Sun Protection Revolution: A New Ingredient for US Sunscreens?
In a move that could revolutionize sun protection, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed allowing a widely used European, Australian, and Asian sunscreen ingredient, Bemotrizinol, to be incorporated into US sunscreens.
But here's where it gets controversial: this chemical offers superior broad-spectrum protection against harmful UV rays compared to current US-approved products. FDA Commissioner Marty Makary criticized the US for its slow approval process, stating, "Americans deserve timely access to the best safe, effective sun protection."
The proposed FDA rule would permit companies to use Bemotrizinol in concentrations up to 6% in their products. This move is welcomed by Karen Murry, the acting director of the US Office of Nonprescription Drugs, who sees it as a step towards providing US consumers with more options.
Mineral sunscreens create a protective barrier, absorbing UV radiation, while chemical sunscreens absorb UV light and release it as heat. Sunscreen is crucial for preventing skin cancer and premature aging, yet most people don't use enough, according to UK health officials. Sunglasses, protective clothing, and hats are also essential for comprehensive sun protection.
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in America, with an estimated 6.1 million adults treated annually for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This proposal aims to address this public health concern by offering Americans better sun protection options.
