Is Europe Facing an Arctic Winter? Meteorologists Predict Cold Spells (2026)

Are we bracing for a winter that will be remembered for centuries? Experts are sounding the alarm, warning of potential Arctic cold heading our way. Let's dive into what this could mean for us.

Meteorologists suggest that the polar vortex, a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding the Earth's poles, will be weaker than usual this winter. For Germany, this could translate to a chilly season with spells of Arctic cold.

The last time Germany experienced a 'winter of the century' due to a similar weather pattern was back in 1978/79. People faced heavy snowfall, intense snowstorms, and unusually low temperatures. This serves as a stark reminder of what could be in store.

White Christmas or a muddy mess?

Currently, weather models predict a generally mild picture for the Christmas period, though with some localized cold snaps. This is also supported by the 42-day trend from wetter.de. However, the European Weather Centre's long-term model indicates a cooling trend, but only after the holidays. Interestingly, the American National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) anticipates significantly higher average temperatures for the month. But, because this average is heavily influenced by the next couple of weeks, it doesn't necessarily rule out a subsequent cooling period. So, the situation remains uncertain.

January: Freezing cold or an early spring?

Experts primarily foresee changeable, milder conditions for January, with little snow and plenty of grey skies. The NOAA model aligns with this, although its calculations have recently fluctuated significantly. The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) models are particularly interesting, suggesting a January that could be slightly cooler and drier than average. Such weather conditions could indicate stable high pressure over Central Europe. But here's where it gets controversial: High pressure in January can be deceptive. While the days might seem pleasant, fog and cooling can quickly lead to frost and permafrost.

Then there's the polar vortex factor. During the heart of winter, it can cause disturbances that send cold Arctic air towards Europe. While no current model predicts an immediate collapse of the polar vortex, the high-pressure tendencies align with such a possibility.

La Niña and El Niño: What's the connection?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Centre has confirmed that La Niña conditions are present and expected to continue through December 2025 - February 2026. Generally, La Niña leads to colder-than-normal temperatures in Western Europe. It's part of a natural climate cycle, but like El Niño, can cause extreme weather worldwide. It occurs when sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean fall below average. It's the opposite of the warm El Niño phase.

Both La Niña and El Niño can significantly impact global weather patterns, including in Europe. The effects are often more pronounced the further a location is from the Pacific Ocean. Typically, La Niña also brings wetter and colder conditions to the Alps, potentially leading to more frequent and heavier snowfall. And this is the part most people miss: For skiers, the prospect of a 'winter of the century' could be welcome news.
