Kameron Misner's Full-Circle Journey: Will He Make the Royals' Opening Day Roster? (2026)

Bold opening: A hometown dream meets hard-won path to the big leagues. And this is the part most people miss: perseverance, not just talent, can rewrite a career trajectory.

Kameron Misner isn’t rushing to chase milestones—he’s chasing belonging. The Poplar Bluff native grew up watching the Royals from afar, and today he’s back within striking distance of where his story began.

Misner was drafted by Kansas City in the 33rd round of the 2016 MLB Draft, a moment he once almost chose to accept but ultimately declined to pursue college first. He opted to attend the University of Missouri on a baseball scholarship, a decision that paid off handsomely. As a freshman in 2017, he earned Freshman All-American honors, and during his junior year he posted standout numbers that helped him become a first-round pick by the Miami Marlins in 2019.

Seven years later, Misner isn’t looking back. He made his MLB debut with the Tampa Bay Rays, and this spring he’s back in his home state, pursuing a full-circle moment with the Royals.

“I know this environment well,” Misner said. “I’ve faced many of these guys, so stepping into this clubhouse feels natural. They’re good people, and I feel right at home.”

Misner was added to Kansas City’s 40-man roster in a offseason trade to bolster outfield depth. This spring, he’ll compete for a bench spot as the Royals shape a 26-man roster for the season.

Physically, Misner checks a lot of boxes. He stands 6-foot-4, bats left-handed, and has shown impressive versatility and offensive potential in Royals camp.

During the previous season with the Rays, he appeared in 71 games, hitting .213 with five homers and 22 RBIs.

In Kansas City, Misner is expected to handle all three outfield positions. His strengths are grit, defense, and a rising level of defensive intensity that aligns with the Royals’ ethos.

“I take defense seriously,” Misner explained. “If you’re not solid in the field, you’re not helping the team. Defense isn’t about you; it’s about the team first.”

This spring, Misner will get extra reps, boosted by several Royals teammates participating in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Those events create opportunities for him to showcase his defensive range and improving offense to the coaching staff.

Through seven spring games so far, Misner is among the left-handed hitters vying for a roster spot, alongside peers like Michael Massey, John Rave, and Josh Rojas.

The Royals’ outfield puzzle remains complex. The plan includes Isaac Collins in left field, Kyle Isbel in center, and Jac Caglianone in right, with Lane Thomas and Starling Marte available off the bench after Marte’s recent signing.

Misner still has minor-league options remaining, so a start in Triple-A Omaha isn’t off the table if he doesn’t crack the opening-day roster.

“As a player, I’m here to do whatever the team needs,” Misner said. “That’s my mindset.”

The Royals are known for utilizing their entire roster, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Misner contribute at Kauffman Stadium at some point during the 2026 season.

Misner expresses gratitude for the chance: “Here we are, years later, and I’m in the clubhouse. I’m incredibly happy.”
