A horrific incident unfolded on a train journey from Doncaster to London King's Cross on Saturday evening, leaving nine people fighting for their lives and a tenth with non-life-threatening injuries. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the event as an "appalling incident", and British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed the arrest of two men. The attack, which occurred on a high-speed train, began after it departed from Peterborough station in Cambridgeshire, eastern England. Witnesses recounted harrowing scenes, with one describing a man wielding a large knife and passengers seeking refuge in the toilets. Olly Foster, a witness, recounted hearing people shouting "run, run, there’s a guy literally stabbing everyone", initially thinking it might be a Halloween prank. As the situation escalated, Foster noticed his hand was "covered in blood" and observed "blood all over the chair" he had leaned on. He also mentioned an older man who bravely "blocked" the attacker from stabbing a younger girl, sustaining injuries to his head and neck. Other passengers used their clothing to try and stem the bleeding. The BTP's Chief Superintendent Chris Casey emphasized the ongoing investigation, stating that counter-terrorism police are providing support. The train came to a stop at Huntingdon, where armed officers were seen entering the train, and two men were arrested. The East of England Ambulance Service mobilized a large-scale response, including numerous ambulances and critical care teams, including three air ambulances. Prime Minister Starmer expressed deep concern, offering his thoughts and gratitude to the emergency services. The disruption to services is expected to persist until Monday, with London North Eastern Railway advising passengers to defer travel. Knife crime in England and Wales has been on the rise since 2011, and despite Britain's stringent gun control measures, it has been labeled a "national crisis" by Starmer. The government's efforts to curb knife crime have led to the seizure or surrender of nearly 60,000 blades in England and Wales, aiming to halve knife crime within a decade. Carrying a knife in public can result in a prison sentence of up to four years, and knife murders have decreased by 18% in the last year, according to the government.
