Meta Faces Legal Action Over Instagram Teen Content Ratings
Meta is under fire from the Motion Picture Association (MPA) for its use of 'PG-13 ratings' to describe content shown to teen accounts on Instagram. The MPA claims that Meta's approach is misleading and could damage trust in its movie ratings system. In a formal letter, an MPA lawyer demanded that Meta immediately and permanently dissociate its Teen Accounts and AI tools from the MPA's rating system, stating that Meta's content restrictions are not aligned with the MPA's curated process.
The controversy arises from Instagram's recent announcement that its teen accounts will be restricted to seeing PG-13 content by default. The MPA, which operates the film rating system established nearly 60 years ago, was not consulted before this announcement. The MPA argues that Meta's claims are false and misleading, as their ratings are based on parental evaluation of entire movies, whereas Meta's content restrictions appear to rely on automated technology.
Meta responded by stating that the update to its teen content policies was made to align with PG-13 movie standards, which parents are familiar with, to enhance parental understanding of the content their teens encounter on Instagram. The company emphasized that it never intended to suggest a partnership with the MPA or that Instagram content had been rated by the movie association.
This dispute highlights the challenges of adapting traditional movie ratings to the dynamic nature of social media platforms, especially when it comes to content targeting younger audiences. It remains to be seen how this legal action will unfold and whether Meta will need to make further adjustments to its content moderation policies.
