Rutgers is reportedly closing in on hiring a new defensive coordinator, with sources indicating that University of South Dakota head coach Travis Johansen is a strong candidate. Head coach Greg Schiano aims to have the new coordinator in place by Monday. Johansen, a renowned defensive strategist, was promoted to head coach after the 2024 season, leading the Yotes to a 10-5 record in the MVFC with a 6-2 league record. This follows his previous role as defensive coordinator at USD since 2019, where he developed 16 players who went on to be drafted in the NFL, receive camp invites, or signed as undrafted free agents. Johansen's defensive prowess is further evidenced by his time at Grand View University, where he compiled a 61-11 record and won five Heart of America Athletic Conference championships. The defense under Johansen's leadership has seen significant improvements, culminating in the program's best NCAA Division I FCS season in 2023. The Coyotes ranked No. 4 in the FCS rankings, achieved a 10-win season for the first time since 1986, and made their first-ever FCS Playoffs quarterfinal round appearance. Johansen's defensive strategies have consistently been ranked in the top-25 in the FCS for scoring defense, passing defense, and total defense. The 2021 season marked a breakthrough for the Coyote defense, securing a top-25 ranking in sacks per game, scoring defense, and rushing defense. Johansen's defensive expertise is further showcased through his successful track record at South Dakota, where he has guided 10 players to the professional ranks.
