Breaking news for cricket fans! Shreyas Iyer is back in the game, but with a twist. He's been appointed as the captain of the Mumbai team for the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT). This comes as a result of Shardul Thakur's unfortunate injury, sidelining him from the domestic 50-over tournament.
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) made the announcement, stating Iyer will lead the team for the remaining league matches. But here's where it gets interesting: Iyer's captaincy beyond the league stage hinges on his fitness clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for international duty. He's been named in the squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting January 11th in Baroda.
The selection committee is playing it cautiously. The BCCI has stated that Iyer's fitness will be assessed, and he'll join the ODI squad if he gets the green light. Reports suggest his chances of full fitness are looking promising. However, if he's cleared for international duty, the MCA will need to appoint a new captain for the VHT knockouts, which begin on January 12th. MCA secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar confirmed, "We will take a call once things are clear. Shreyas will lead the team in the remaining two league games."
Iyer's been out of action since undergoing surgery in Australia for a spleen injury sustained last October during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. Tuesday's match will mark his return to competitive cricket after more than three months.
Mumbai is currently sitting pretty in second place in Group C, well-positioned to advance to the next round. Their upcoming league games are against Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday (January 6th) and Punjab on January 8th, both in Jaipur.
