Arsenal just got a whole lot more exciting! We're thrilled to announce the signing of Smilla Holmberg, a rising star in women's football, on a long-term contract. This move signifies a major boost for the team, bringing in fresh talent and bolstering their already impressive lineup.
This young sensation, a 19-year-old right-back from Sweden, joins us from Hammarby IF, a club in her homeland. Smilla's journey is a testament to her dedication and skill. Born in Stockholm, she began her football journey with Hammarby at the tender age of seven, climbing through the youth ranks before making her senior debut at a remarkable 15 years old in 2022.
Over her time with Hammarby, Smilla showcased her talent, making an impressive 96 appearances and scoring 10 goals. Her contributions were instrumental in the team's success, helping them secure the Swedish league title in 2023 and the Swedish Cup in both 2023 and 2025.
On the international stage, Smilla has already made her mark. She earned her senior debut against Italy in the UEFA Women’s Nations League group stage in May 2025. She was then selected for Sweden’s squad for the UEFA European Women’s Championship in the summer of 2025. During the tournament, Smilla played three times as Sweden reached the quarter-finals, demonstrating her ability to perform under pressure. She currently boasts nine international caps and one goal.
Smilla herself is ecstatic about this new chapter. “It’s always been my dream to play for Arsenal,” she shared. “This is a very special moment for me and my family, but it’s also about joining a club with the highest standards and a strong winning culture.
