On Monday, Mr. Tedros revealed that survivors were being treated at Abu Jebaiha Hospital in South Kordofan, with urgent calls for blood donations and medical aid. He also highlighted a disturbing detail: paramedics and responders were attacked while trying to evacuate the injured.
'WHO deplores these senseless attacks on civilians and health facilities,' Mr. Tedros stated, calling for an end to the violence and greater access to humanitarian aid. Without assigning blame, he pleaded on social media, 'Sudanese have suffered far too much. Ceasefire now!'
The RSF's capture of the Heglig oil field, near the South Sudan border, has been described as a 'pivotal' moment. According to Reuters, government troops retreated to protect the oil facilities, while another source confirmed that army personnel and oil workers fled into South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011. Heglig is critical, housing the main processing facility for South Sudanese oil, a lifeline for both South Sudan's revenue and Sudan's hard-currency earnings.
