As the shutdown deepened, with federal workers unpaid and critical programs like SNAP benefits delayed for 42 million Americans, the focus shifted to healthcare. On Saturday, Republican senators, including Lindsey Graham, Rick Scott, and Bill Cassidy, rallied around a proposal from Trump. He suggested redirecting subsidies currently allocated to insurance companies under Obamacare and giving them directly to individuals through health savings accounts.
Trump's proposal, shared on Truth Social, essentially aims to replace the existing system with a model where individuals receive funds to purchase their own healthcare. This idea, similar to a plan Graham proposed in 2017, has garnered support from key Republicans. Graham hailed the idea as "brilliant," while Cassidy also praised Trump's vision. Scott went further, stating his intention to draft a bill based on the proposal.
But here's where it gets controversial... This plan could face significant hurdles. First, it's unlikely to gain any Democratic support, as it involves repealing and replacing Obamacare with health savings accounts. Second, it raises questions about how consumers would be able to afford plans from the same insurance companies, especially if the ACA's protections for pre-existing conditions are removed.
Elizabeth Warren, a prominent Democrat, voiced concerns, highlighting the potential for such a plan to create a "death spiral" in ACA plans. Trump, however, doubled down on his stance, advocating for the removal of "fat cat" insurance companies from the healthcare system.
Bernie Sanders weighed in, suggesting that if Republicans are truly concerned about the insurance industry, they should support "Medicare for All."
And this is the part most people miss... The Senate adjourned without a resolution. While Republican leaders have expressed openness to a proposal from moderate Democrats to end the shutdown in exchange for a later vote on Obamacare subsidies, the path forward remains uncertain.
In a somewhat bizarre turn of events, Senator Markwayne Mullin posted photos of a meeting with Trump in the Oval Office, giving the impression that they were working tirelessly over the weekend. However, the photos were actually taken on Friday, before Trump's golf trip.
