WA Avocado Boom: Record Crop and China Export Dreams (2026)

Get ready for a juicy story about the West Australian avocado industry and its exciting prospects!

The Green Gold Rush Continues

West Australian avocado growers are on a mission to conquer the Chinese export market, riding the wave of the fruit's unprecedented popularity. With a potential record-breaking harvest in the South West region, these growers are poised for success.

Trevor Bendotti, from Bendotti Avocados, predicts, "We're on course for WA's biggest season ever. The previous record is within our sights, and we're determined to surpass it."

But here's where it gets controversial...

Avoiding the Glut

As production soars, concerns about oversupply and market saturation are resurfacing. Just four years ago, WA avocado growers faced a glut, dumping their produce. However, with careful planning and a balanced market, growers like Clint De Campo are optimistic.

"This year, we're seeing a positive shift. Yields are excellent, the fruit is pristine, and prices are stable," Mr. De Campo shares.

Mr. Bendotti emphasizes the importance of strategic planning to ensure the industry's longevity. "Haphazard growing and picking will harm everyone. With increased volumes, managing the domestic market and expanding exports is crucial."

The Export Strategy

Avocado industry leaders are placing their bets on expanding exports to maintain supply-demand equilibrium. In the past financial year, Australia exported a mere 14,000 tonnes out of the 130,000 tonnes grown nationally. The focus is now on securing new markets, with China being the ultimate goal.

Brad Rodgers, director of Avocados Australia WA, explains, "We're revamping our national strategy, with a strong emphasis on exports. Securing access to China is pivotal for our growth."

WA already has trade access to Japan and Thailand due to its pest-free status, but China remains the industry's holy grail. "We've laid the groundwork, signing MOUs with Shanghai markets worth $250 million in Australian avocados. Their interest is undeniable," Mr. Rodgers adds.

Formal approval for exporting Australian avocados to China is still under negotiation between Canberra and Beijing. Industry leaders are confident that WA growers are ready to ship, awaiting the green light.

So, what do you think? Is the avocado industry's focus on exports a smart move? Will China be the key to their success? Share your thoughts in the comments!
